      J. L. Scifers Dies; Homesteaded at Arriba in 1907

      Funeral services were held for John L. Scifers of Genoa, Tuesday afternoon, October 31 [1950], from the Buchanan Funeral home in Limon at 1:30 o'clock. The aged man died at his home in Genoa Friday, October 27 [1950], following a long illness.

      The Rev. Tom Franks of the Limon Methodist church officiated at the last rites. "Lead Kindly Light" and "Rock of Ages" were sung by Mrs. Robert Sauve accompanied at the piano by Mrs. K. K. Statton.

      Casket bearers were I. S. Brown, Roy Johnson, W. H. Emery, J. A. Morgan, A. B. Schrack and John Kaufman.

      Interment was in the Arriba cemetery.

      John Landon Scifers was born in Bates county, Mo., July 8, 1861 and departed this life on October 27, 1950 at the age of 89 years, three months and 19 days.

      The family moved to a farm near Unionville in Putnam county, Mo., when he was a child, and there he grew to manhood.

      He was married to Elizabeth C. Loughead in 1879 and to this union five children were born, four of whom are living: Joseph M. Scifers and Eleanor Halvorsen of Elma, Wash., Thomas H. Scifers of Los Angeles, Calif. and Chloe Ashton of Arriba, Colo. Mamie Agnes died in infancy.

      In 1897 Mr. Scifers moved his family to Griffenville [sic; should be Griffinsville], Ia., where he operated a country store until 1907 when the family all moved to Arriba, Colo. and filed on a homestead 12 miles north of town.

      Mr. Scifers again operated a grocery store for a few years but about 1912 he engaged in the implement business. In 1932 he retired from business and devoted his time in caring for his wife who was in poor health. She passed away in January, 1936.

      On April 2, 1945, Mr. Scifers married Mrs. Minnie Garner of Genoa, Colo. and lived in Genoa until his death.

      Besides his widow and four children he is survived by eight grandchildren, nine great grandchildren and one great, great grandchild. Two grandchildren died in infancy and one brother, Joseph B. Scifers also preceded him in death.

      Mr. Scifers was a member of the Odd Fellows lodge in Iowa and a member of the Modern Woodman [sic] in Colorado. Early in life he united with the Methodist church in West Liberty, Mo.
