    • (1) Elizabeth Ann Grubb:

      NOTES:

The death certificate of Cornelius shows that Elizabeth was born in OHIO. Sarah MORRIS, wife of Cornelius, served as informant for the certificate. Eliza MORRIS, an older sister to Cornelius, was born in OHIO about 1842 and Cornelius was born in Indiana in 1845. Thus the MORRIS family must have moved to Indiana between 1842 and 1845.

      (2) E-mail message dated May 18, 2000 from J. Douglas Sailor to J. Michael Frost:

In regard to your recent posting concerning Elizabeth Sailor, m. I. Morris. I show them on my family tree, together with the children that you listed. Her sister, CHRISTINA, married his brother, I. A. MORRIS, and had the following children: Sara, Lena, male twins, Johnson, Cora, Emeline, Martha, William, and Jacob. I don't have the given names of the Morris brothers here in WA since all my reference material is in CA, where we will return in Nov. The following is an excerpt from my family history:

After their marriage in 1800, Jacob and Esther [Crow] Sailor [Elizabeth's parents] moved to Stock, Nobel County, Ohio, as it is now known. At that time, the place where they settled was named Sailor's Run, in Guernsey County and later in 1815 when Monroe County was organized, it was included in that county. Sailor's Run is located on SR 260 in the extreme southeast corner of Ohio, about 25 miles north of the Ohio River, bordering on West Virginia. It is still a remote and sparsely populated area. The following is taken from the history of Noble County:

"Sailor's Run, a stream flowing into Duck Creek, about two miles below Carlisle, is so named after Jacob Sailor, an early settler on this stream. Jacob's wife was Esther Crow, a sister to the Crow sisters who were killed by the Indians near Wheeling, Greene County, Pennsylvania in 1791. On Sailor's Run was the last Indian camp in this part of the country. It was occupied by a party of Indian hunters in 1812. None were ever seen after that year, all deserting the country to engage in wars. Jacob Sailor is said to have built the first hewed log house on the creek."

All Jacob Sailor's children were born at Sailor's Run. When Jacob and Esther settled in the area in 1802, it was a wilderness. A portion of its surface is abrupt and hilly. Large quantities of tobacco were raised and much pork exported. Wheat and corn grow well in the western portion of Monroe County. Iron ore and coal abound. The valleys of the streams are very narrow, bounded by rough hills. In some places are natural rock grottoes or caves. The first settlement was made in 1799, near the mouth of Sunfish Creek. At this time wolves were numerous and caused much alarm.

These were the conditions in Ohio when Jacob and Esther Sailor were raising their twelve children. Before 1830, they sold out to William Smith and moved to Elkhart County, Indiana with part of their family.

The following appears in the history of Elkhart County, Indiana:

"Olive Township in Elkhart County, Indiana, is in the western part of the county. This township was organized in the spring of 1836 by Cornelius Terwillinger, Jacob Sailor, Frederick Morris, Samuel and Levi Martin, and David Allen. Of the above named persons, Jacob Sailor was the first settler here, having arrived in the early part of 1834. The first election in the township was held in April 1837 at the home of Issac Morris. The voters were Daniel Michael, Jacob Sailor, Sr., Jacob Sailor, Jr., Samuel Martin, Moses Sailor, William Sailor, Cornelius Terwillinger, James Dodge, Issac Morris, Aaron Medders, and Frederic Morris. The latter three were sons-in-law of Jacob. "

A bronze plaque in the Elkhart County Historical Museum in Bristol, Indiana commemorates Jacob Sailor as the first settler in Olive Township, Elkhart County."
