ELIZABETH, second wife of MAJOR JAMES GYLES

This is the kind of discovery which gladdens the heart and brings a sure reward to conscientious work. It will stand the test of examination.

She was ELIZABETH, daughter of SAMUEL TIDD, (son of JOHN TIDD, the first), and wife, SARAH (_____).

Herein lies the proof:

When the estate of JOHN SOUTHWICK of SALEM, the original nesting place of the GYLES flock, as EDWARD GYLES, the first and others, (vide, GILES MEMORIAL, ante, p. 716), was settled, he had made a will, dated October ye 26th, 1672, which among other provisions, recited; "5thly. I giue to ELIZABETH GILES ALIUS TIDD fower pownds in Cattell." He names his loving brother, JOSIAH SOUTHWICK, et al. The will was proved in Salem Court, 29: 9: 1672, and attested the same date by "SARA, the wife of the deceased," which is a very important fact. (Probate Records of Essex County, Mass., Vol. II, pp. 313-4.)

[Note by compiler: According to Vital Records of Salem, Massachusetts to the End of the Year 1849, Salem, MA: Essex Institute, 1925, Vol. 6?Deaths, p. 241, John SOUTHWICK died on October 25, 1672. If that is true, his will would not have been executed on October 26, 1672.]

Now, SAMUEL TIDD, was a son of the first JOHN TIDD, POPE, (PIONEERS, p. 448, and vide, post, TIDD, this PART, as indic.).

JOHN SOUTHWICK, b. 1620, was a son of the first LAWRENCE SOUTHWICK, and married, first, SARAH, widow of SAMUEL TIDD in 1652; sec., Anne, widow of Thomas Flint, she d. in the summer of 1668; third, Sarah Burnett, Feb. 3, 1668-9; he died Oct. 25, 1672, and the last SARAH was his widow, SARA, when he d. in 1672. She m. sec., THOMAS COOPER. He had a brother, JOSIAH SOUTHWICK, born in 1632.

(HIST. of SALEM, MASS., PERLEY, Vol. II, p. 53.)

Now, the GREAT FACT, follows;

"ELIZABETH, daughter of SAMUEL and SARA TIDD was born, May (__), 1642." (Idem, Vol. III, p. 30.)

"Thomas Cooper, husbandman, married widow, SARAH SOUTHWICK, June 12, 1674; dau. Elizabeth, born, Nov. 1, 167?(Idem, p. 75). Consult, also, Annals of Salem, (Felt, Vol. 2, pp. 580-1). 1658, JOHN BURTON; JOSIAH SOUTHWICK, et al.

SAMUEL TIDD, d. 1651, (SAVAGE, Vol. IV, p. 300).

Apparently, as premised, JAMES GYLES had been in America bef. 1668, or else ELIZABETH TIDD m. him early on his coming, or m. him bef., and went to Eng., with him to return in 1668, as she was 18 by 1660, and ready for m.

But, the clincher is the rem. to New Jersey of that JOSIAH SOUTHWICK, who became a prominent settler of BURLING., not far from Piscataway, where the GYLES resided, and, later, at Stoney Brook.

(ARCH., VOL. XXI, p. 534.)

DEADMAN-GRYMES-TALIAFERRO?Every now and then a reference in the body of a deed reveals a startling fact that throws unexpected light on a tradition, or claim, that has long been accepted as a fact. Such a discovery has been my recent lot and it would seem to definitely settle the question of the identity of the wife of Robert Taliaferro, I, the Immigrant. She has long been placed as Sarah, daughter of the Rev. Charles Grymes (1612/3-1662/3), who was born in Igtham, Kent, England, and who died in Virginia; matriculated at Cambridge at the age of 18 in 1631. In Tyler's Quarterly, vol. XXI, pp. 83-84, it is shown by me that the wife of the first Robert Taliaferro was not Sarah, but Katherine (Sarah being the wife of the second Robert; and nee Catlett). On November 20, 1672, "Mrs. Katherine Taliaferro" was granted 600 acres of land for the transportation of 8 negroes and 4 English servants "which rights I doe hereby assign over to my son Robert Taliaferro." (Rappahannock County records D.B. 5, p. 99.) Since Katherine Taliaferro received this patent it would seem that she was then a widow and that therefore Robert Taliaferro, I, had died before this date. The Rev. Charles Grymes died 1662/3 and left a will which was offered for probate by his widow, Katherine Grymes, who on August 26, 1678, as his executrix, was sued by Thomas Godlington of London. (See Tyler's Quarterly, vol. V, p. 260). Although the record of the proving of the will of the Rev. Charles Grymes does not appear, his widow Katherine must have finally succeeded in proving its validity, for on August 9, 1711, in Essex County Court, Robert Taliaferro, III (grandson of Robert Taliaferro, I, and Katherine, his wife), sold to Augustine Smith 200 acres of land, "part of 600 acres formerly granted to Mr. Charles Grymes September 4, 1654 and by his last will and testament bequeathed to Katherine Dedman, grandmother of the said Robert Taliaferro." (Essex County records D.B. 12, p. 426) On August 9, 1692. John Smith, of Ware Parish, Gloucester County, made a deed to John Taliaferro, of St. Mary's Parish, Essex County, for 200 acres of land, "the one half moiety of the land taken up by Charles Grymes, dec'd, November 22, 1661, and bequeathed by him to Mary Dedman." (Essex County records, Book r, p. 40.) On June 20, 1726, Samuel Hoyle deeded to Samuel Skinker, both of King George Co., 300 acres of land, "part of a patent of 600 acres taken up by Charles Grymes on September 4, 1654, who by his last Will & Testament Gave and Bequeathed one Moiety or half of the said patent to his Daughter in Law Ann Dedman which said Ann intermarried with a certain Edward Hoyle by whom she had issue the above named Samuel Hoyle, party of these presents." (King George County records, D.B. I, p. 361.) From this we see that Katherine, wife of Robert Taliaferro, Ann, wife of Edward Hoyle, and Mary Dedman were sisters and daughters of Katherine, wife of the Rev. Charles Grymes, by a previous marriage and hence step-daughters ("daughters-in-law" in the 17th and 18th century use of the word) of the Rev. Charles Grymes. Katherine Grymes was evidently the widow of Henry Dedman (or Deadman, the name is spelled both ways) who was granted 350 acres of land in Rappahannock River June 27, 1650. (Cavaliers and Pioneers, p. 191.) On November 18, 1653, Henry Dedman was granted 400 acres in Lancaster County bounded with the land of Mr. James Bagnall and with another tract now in the possession of the said Deadman; 150 acres by right of a patent granted him for 350 acres June 27, 1650, which is relinquished to make this good, and 250 acres for the transportation of 5 persons. (Ibid., p. 245.) On March 17, 1663, Capt. George Bryer and Richard Lawrence were granted 300 acres in Rappahannock County "extending along the creek side to the head of Parson Grymes" (sic). (Ibid., p. 467.) On March 16, 1663/4 Bryer and Lawrence were granted 3,000 acres in the same county "extending along the creek side to the land of Charles Grimes, dec'd." (Ibid., p. 527.) This latter grant is probably a regrant of the patent of the preceding year, and, if the Rev. Charles Grymes was not dead at the time of the first patent, he was certainly deceased when the second grant was made. On June 4, 1652, Henry Dedman made bond for 8,337 lbs. of tobacco to Richard Bennett. On February 19, 1652/3, he gave a heifer to his son; October 24, 1653, he had 3 tithables; February 6, 1654/5, he was taxed with 2 tithables; and June 6, 1655, he was deceased and Richard Perrott was his administrator. (See Fleet's Lancaster County Court Orders 1652-1655.) In the absence of more direct reference it is certainly permissible to place Katherine, wife of the Rev. Charles Grymes, as the widow of this Henry Deadman and as the mother of Katherine Deadman (who married Robert Taliaferro, I), Ann Deadman (who married Edward Hoyle) and Mary Deadman,

[Note by compiler: The compiler has not found, in the Library of Virginia's database of Virginia Land Office Patents and Grants/Northern Neck Grants and Surveys, a record of the patent for 600 acres of land which was reportedly granted to "Mrs. Katherine Taliaferro" on November 20, 1672.

The document in question may have been a document certifying "transportation rights," but commonly called "headrights." Thousands of Virginia's early settlers arrived in the colony as a result of the headright system. Under this system, anyone who paid for his transportation (or someone else's transportation) to Virginia was entitled to receive 50 acres of land for each immigrant transported to Virginia at his expense. In order to receive a land patent under the headright system, an individual would petition the county court for certification of these rights. The certificate was then recorded in the county court minute books. The petition for a certificate was usually filed soon after the arrival of the immigrants, while proofs of the claim where fresh. The documents certifying these rights were used as paper currency and freely sold, bartered or assigned to others at or near the time of certification. For that reason they could have remained in circulation for a considerable time before ultimately being "tendered" for land. Before 1705, these rights could have been claimed for multiple arrivals of the same person.

The compiler has not examined Rappahannock County records D.B. 5, p. 99, to determine whether the document in question is a (1) patent or (2) a document certifying headrights. However, regardless of the exact nature of the document, it would not, in all likelihood, have been issued to "Mrs. Katherine Taliaferro" if she was married at the time of issuance.]

SPECULATION on the origin of Robert Talafero or Tolliver who settled in Virginia by 1647 has ranged from Scotland where the forms Taillefer, Talfer, Telfer, and others are found from the thirteenth century onwards, through England where the forms include Tolver and Tulliver, through France to Italy where Taliaferra and Taliaferro are not uncommon. This meant that the surname in itself, being so widespread was of little use as a clue, and it was, therefore, with relief and gratitude for our good fortune that we found in the London area, the likeliest immediate place of origin for an early Virginia settler, references to members of a family of the name which appeared to fit the Virginia data perfectly.

From these, as will be seen, the conclusion has now been reached that Robert the settler was the grandson of Bartholomew Taliaferro, a subject of the Duke of Venice, who settled in London and was made denizen in March 1562.

Important points in favour of the identification were that this particular family of Taliaferro was the only one found mentioned in the probate records of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury and of London, and that after 1647 the name entirely disappeared from these probate records. Furthermore, letters of administration of the estate of Francis Talafero were granted on the 20th of August 1647 to his daughter Anne, not to his son Robert, as we might have expected had he been in England at the time. Robert was then aged twenty years and nine months.

Finally, the emigrant called one of his sons Francis.

It now remains to see if light can be thrown on the Italian origin and ancestry of Bartholomew and to this end further research is now proceeding. . . .
