Minnie Georgianna "Min" Nelson Murphy
Birth: Jun. 27, 1864, Mount Zion, Van Buren County, Iowa, USA
Death: Feb. 1, 1942, Vinita, Craig County, Oklahoma, USA

Mrs. James F. Murphy

Minnie Georgiana Murphy was born near Mt. Zion, Iowa June 27, 1864, and departed this life at her home in Vinita, Okl., Sunday Feb. 1, 1942, at the age of 77 years.

Mrs. Murphy joined the Mt. Zion Presbyterian church in girlhood; she was married to James F. Murphy on Sept. 21, 1892. She came with him to Vinita in 1902 and has been a faithful member of the Presbyterian church ever since. She was an elder of the church from 1931 to 1938 and taught the beginners in the church school for twenty years or more. She served as president of the Ladies Aid for thirty consecutive years from Bonaparte relatives.

Mrs. Murphy was a charter member of the order of Eastern Star, Chapter 20, of Vinita.

She was one of a family of six children, the daughter of John W. and Eliza Boner Nelson, and was preceded in death by her youngest sister, Mrs. Webb Barker of Des Moines, in 1928 and her only brother, John E. Nelson of Mt. Zion, June 1, 1936. Three sisters survive her: Mrs. Marietta Perkins, Mrs. O. S. Calhoun, and Mrs. Nelle Hootman.

Her husband, James F. Murphy, preceded her in death March 26, 1930. Three children of this home, Earle N. Murphy, Kenneth Murphy and Mres. Perry Nair, with whom she lived, mourn her passing. She is also survived by one grandson, Duane Kenneth Murphy and a number of nieces and nephews.

The following poem was found in her diary:

Grant me this, dear Lord, to be
Strong for tasks which fall to me;
Kind, when hunger finds my door,
Brave for all that lies before;
Grateful for thy gifts bestowed.
Patient, when my pace is slowed;
Willing, when I can, to share
Burdens grim which others bear;
Gracious, when a touch of grace
May exalt the commonplace;
Gentle, always when distress
May be soothed by gentleness;
Gentle always unto thee
And the cause of liberty.

Those attending the funeral of Mrs. Murphy at Vinita, Okla., were her sister, Mrs. O. S. Calhoun, Mrs. Dirk Miller, and Claude Calhoun.

Moses "Curly Headed Mose" McClintic
Birth: Apr. 22, 1789, Bath County, Virginia, USA
Death: Aug. 8, 1856, Lewisburg, Greenbrier County, West Virginia, USA

[Note by compiler: Bath County, VA did not exist on the decedent's birth date. Bath County was formed from Augusta, Botetourt and Greenbrier Counties on 14 December 1790.]

Moses McClintic was the son of Robert McClintic and Jane Mann. He was the third child of their nine children. He was born in Bath County, Virginia April 22, 1789. On October 22, 1822, he married Margaret (Peggy) Beard, the daughter of Major Samuel Beard. (The Military Rank in the Virginia Militia). At the time of their marriage Moses was 34 years old and Peggy was 20. They were the parents of one child, Samuel who was born September 28, 1823.

Moses moved to Greenbrier County, Virginia in 1800 where his parents and four brothers and two sisters settled on a farm on Culbertson Creek near the present town of Williamsburg, West Virginia. (Greenbrier County became part of the state of West Virginia in 1863.) Moses was about 11 years old then and was known as "Curly Headed Mose" because he had dark curly hair. His boyhood was said to have been wild and reckless. At age 23 Moses volunteered as an Ensign in Captain Solomon Taylor's Company of the Virginia Militia that was taken from Lewisburg in the war of 1812. The company was under the command of Colonial William Henry Harrison in the bloody battles of Lake Erie and the Northwest. General Harrison was to later become the ninth president of the United States. While at Fort Meigs, Ohio, Moses was elevated to the rank of Lieutenant.

After his return from the war of 1812, some time after 1814, Moses entered the Lewisburg Academy as a student. The Lewisburg Academy was founded by Dr. John McElhenney, the minister of the Old Stone Presbyterian Church. The academy closed in 1861, the year the civil war began and reopened in 1865, after the war ended as Lewisburg Male School, which finally became Greenbrier Military School. While a student in Lewisburg, Moses boarded in the home of Thomas (Old Tommy) Craig. Moses became the superintendent of the Colonel John Stuart Estates at Frankford, which was about 10 miles north of Lewisburg, about 1823, the year in which Colonel Stuart died. Colonel Stuart's farms were left to his son Charles in his will. Moses remained as superintendent until 1837. Charles Stuart died in 1850 and the farm and brick home built by Col. John Stuart, for his son Charles, was acquired by Moses Coffman, the father of Samuel Coffman.

In 1839 Moses purchased a farm of 520 acres two miles north of Lewisburg. This farm was owned by the widow of Dr. John Simpkins. Dr. Simpkins acquired the property from the heirs of Col. Samuel Brown. The farm was know as the Samuel Brown Plantation. The Manor House was built from brick before 1820. Col. Brown was one of the first trustees appointed for the town of Lewisburg in 1782.

Moses was a member of the Frankford Methodist Church for nine years. After he moved to Lewisburg from his home on Culbertson Creek, he transferred his membership to the Methodist Episcopal Church at Lewisburg. Moses constantly supported his church and gave a gift of one thousand dollars to help pay for building the brick church at Frankford. Moses was known by the endearing title of "Uncle Moses." When he died August 6, 1856 at age 67, he left his estate to his widow and only child Samuel McClintic.

Peggy Beard McClintic died some twenty years later on July 8, 1876. Samuel McClintic, her only son, survived her. Two years after her death, in 1878, Samuel married Ellen Bright, the daughter of the Honorable Kyle Bright and sister of Jesse F. Bright. Ellen was twenty-five years younger than her husband, having been born in 1848. Samuel was 55 years of when he married Ellen, who was 30 years of age. Samuel was established as one of Greenbrier County's most substantial farmer and graziers upon whose judgement you could always rely.

Samuel McClintic died March 2, 1884, in his 61st year, and was buried beside his mother in the Lewisburg Cemetery behind the present Old Stone Presbyterian Church. As there were no children from his marriage his entire estate passed to his wife Ellen.

After Samuel's death, Ellen Bright married Charles W. (Charley Fox) McClung who was six years her senior. Charley Fox died May 19, 1906 at age 64 and was buried near the grave site of Samuel McClintic. Ellen died thirteen years later in 1919, at age 71. She was buried between her first and second husbands in the cemetery behind the Old Stone Presbyterian Church. Her estate passed to her brother's son Raymond E. Bright of Frankford, WVA. In 1951 Mr. Bright sold the farm of 520 acres, including the ten room brick house with its white columns to Mr. Henry Lindsay.

Mrs Harriet Malinda Barry Coffey
Birth: Apr. 28, 1835, Spartanburg County, South Carolina, USA
Death: Nov. 13, 1915, Davis, Murray County, Oklahoma, USA

Married Andrew Boyd Coffey in 1851 in Lafayette County, Mississippi.

Printed in The Davis News on Nov. 18, 1915; Reprinted with permission

Death of Mrs. H. M. Coffey.

Mrs. H. M. Coffey, mother of Mrs. D. A. Anderson and Mrs. G. H. Collins, died at the Anderson home in Davis Saturday evening at 8 o'clock. The greater part of her long life was spent at Abbeville, Miss., where many of her relatives still live. Failing health caused her to break up housekeeping three years ago, and she came to Davis to make her home with Mrs. D. A. Anderson. She reached a ripe old age, being 80 years old April 28, 1915. For two years she had been an invalid and confined to her bed.

Early in life she joined the Methodist church and remained a member until the day of her death. When she was active and in good health she was a great reader, and took great delight in reading about her church and its history and its doctrines, and was also well informed as to current events.

She was one of those quiet, modest Southern women who believed her greatest mission in the world was to maintain a true home and train her children to be good citizens. How well she succeeded in her life's purpose, one had only to know her home and the children who went out from it.

She is survived by seven children - four sons and three daughters: M. F. Coffey, A. H. Coffey and M. H. Coffey, all of Myrtle, Miss.; B. B. Coffey of Nashville, Tenn.; Mrs. J. D. Johnson of Memphis, Tenn; Mrs. G. H. Collins of Oklahoma City; and Mrs. D. A. Anderson of Davis.

Sunday afternoon at the Anderson home simple but impressive religious services were conducted by Rev. J. G. Blackwood, pastor of Methodist church, after which her body was laid to rest in Green Hill Cemetery.

Mrs Mary Jane "Polly" Parker Kendrick
Birth: Mar. 6, 1785, Elbert County, Georgia, USA
Death: Dec. 18, 1846, Jeffersontown, Jefferson County, Kentucky, USA

Obituary: Died on the 18th December 1846, Mrs. MARY KENDRICK, after a lingering illness, which she bore with Christian fortitude and resignation, aged 62 years. That have closed the labors of a mother in Israel. Mrs. K. was a sister of Daniel Parker, the author of the "Two Seeds" doctrine, and became a member of the Baptist church when quite a girl. Her religious influence was deeply felt by her family in the midst of wickedness. After her sons had become ministers and baptized most of her other children, she arose in a public assembly and called their attention while she boldly declared her faith in the cause of reformation. W.

(The Millennial Harbinger, Obituary Notices, 2nd Ser. Vol. IV. April 1847, p. 239).

Another obituary was published in the Christian Messenger and Bible Advocate, St. Louis, MO (January 1847), p. 23.

The article from the newspaper is the only documented proof that Mary (Parker) Kendrick was the daughter of Elder John Parker who was a Revolutionary War Patriot in Virginia.
