Harold Jay Born
Birth: Jun. 12, 1918, USA
Death: Mar. 31, 2005, Tulsa County, Oklahoma, USA

Harold Jay Born, who led an international engineering firm and was a University of Tulsa distinguished alumnus, died Thursday. He was 87.

A service for Born will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. John's Episcopal Church under the direction of Stanleys Funeral Service.

After graduating from the University of Tulsa with bachelor's degrees in prelaw and petroleum engineering, Born went on to earn a master's degree in engineering from TU and graduate from the Harvard University School of Law.

He later went to work for Phillips Petroleum Co.'s Process Development Department.

In 1946, Born joined his father, Sidney Born, a former TU petroleum research professor, to form Born Engineering, an international engineering firm that would build oil refineries and petrochemical plants worldwide. He later directed Born Heaters, which manufactured direct-fired heaters capable of burning a variety of fossil fuels.

The younger Born was responsible for pioneering the application of cast refractory walls in direct-fired heaters and was a co-author of two U.S. patents covering pyrolysis and catalytic tube heaters.

In 1973, the Borns founded Born Inc., which served as the parent company for the Born family's worldwide business endeavors.

Born later presided over TU's alumni organization, the Tulsa Club, the Southern Hills Country Club board and the Philbrook Museum of Arts board of trustees.

Born was also a director of the Republic Bank & Trust, a member of the Summit and Petroleum clubs, a senior warden of St. John's Episcopal Church and was honored as one of TU's distinguished alumni.
He is survived by two daughters, Carolyn Halsey of New Canaan, Conn., and Kay Dericks of Tulsa; two sons, Sidney Born of Tulsa and Harold Born of New York City; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Friends are contributing to the Philbrook Museum of Art, the University of Tulsa and St. John's Episcopal Church.

Hartmann Hunsaker
Birth: Jan. 27, 1689, Bern, Switzerland
Death: 1733, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA . . .

Note: The Hunsakers lived in the Canton of Bern, Switzerland. The Swiss government confiscated all Mennonite land and deported and jailed all suspected Mennonites/Anabaptists. On a list of those jailed in in the dungeon of the Island Castle in Bern in 1728 appeared the names of Jacob Honacre, Rudoph Honacre, and Hartmen Honacre. It is believed this is actually "Hunsaker." Hartmann gave his home as Katzbach. Hartman and his family lost their lands and possessions and left at the request of the state government. They went to Wiesbaden, Germany, but the Mennonites we re not extremely welcome there either. He applied for Relief and help from the Mennonite Committee at Amsterdam where "Hartman Huntinger with wife and seven children apply to emigrate to Pennsylvania", probably because William Penn had offered homes to religious dissenters who wanted t o enjoy liberty in matters of religion.

Birth: 27 JAN 1689/90 in Katzbach, Bern, Switzerland
Immigration: 10 SEP 1731 Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania, USA

Note: Listed in the Amsterdam Archives (No. 2274) on a list dated 23 June 1731 of Palatines who were prospective Pennsylvania emigrants requiring help from the Mennonite Relief Committee. They sailed from Rotterdam on the ship "Pennsylvania Merchant", John Stedman, Commander, with wife Anna and six children: Frena, Elizabeth, Anna, Ursul, Meyer and Hannes. Last name was spelled "Huntseker".

A list of the ship's passengers show the following members of the family: Hartman Huntseker; over 16 years of age - Anna, Eliz. (Elizabeth), and Frena (Verene); under 16 years of a ge - Urse (Ursula), Meyer (Mary), Anna, and Hannes (John). The ship arrived in Philadelphia on 10 Sep 1731 and Hartmann signed his oath of allegiance the next day. Briefly settled near Germantown, Pennsylvania, but eventually settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

Residence: Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, USA

Note: The family lived first in Germantown, Pennsylvania, but within a few years moved to Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, by which time they had nine children - eight daughters and one son.

Henry Garrett Sandker
Birth: Aug. 24, 1816, Germany
Death: Jul. 3, 1889, Boone County, Missouri, USA

Henry Garrett is the Americanized version of the actual name. The name in which he immigrated to this country from Germany was Gerhard H. Sandker, arrived in Baltimore, MD in 1833 at the age of 16 years. He married Malinda Mays [Melinda J. Mayo] in Boone County, Missouri on 17 November 1853.

* * *

The 1850 census of Boone County shows that Melinda Mayo, daughter of Jane Mayo (who was the wife of David Phillippe) was 12 years old [born 1838] at that time which would have made her 15 when she married Garrett Sandker. There appears to be an error in the headstone date when it was etched into the stone, the date was probably provided by one of the descendants of Melinda.

Thank you for the notification Mr. Much.

Henry Michael "Mick" Short
Birth: Jan. 27, 1873, Wilson County, Kansas, USA
Death: Jan. 28, 1954, Chanute, Neosho County, Kansas, USA

Henry Michael Short, B. 1-27-1873, Chetopa Twp., Wilson, Kansas; d. 1-28-1954, at his home in Chanute, Neosho, Kansas, and buried in Altoona, Kansas, Cemetery, according to the rituals of the Catholic Church.

Married 1896, in Erie, Kansas, Ella Anna Keiser, B. 9-7-1877, near Wrightsville, Pennsylvania; daughter of Henry and Susan (Smeltzer) Keiser, who emigrated from Pennsylvania, to Kansas when Ella was in her sixth year. They settled in Thayer, Neosho, Kansas, where Henry became a section foreman on the Santa Fe Railroad. Before coming to Kansas, he had been a commercial fisherman, fishing on the Susquehanna River and Chesapeake Bay. Henry Keiser and his wife, his father and mother, his son, William, his daughter, Mary, and a grandchild are all buried in the cemetery at Thayer, Neosho, Kansas.

He, with the rest of the children of Patrick and Eliza Jane Short then living, was at Van Buren, Missouri, in 1888 when Patrick died and was buried there. He was in the race for the homestead sites when the Cherokee Strip, in Oklahoma, was opened for settlement. He staked a claim, but later abandoned it because he mistakenly believed the red soil was of little or no value. The soil in Southeastern Kansas, to which he was accustomed, was black limestone. The agricultural wealth of that part of Oklahoma today is evidence of his error in judgment at that time.

After his marriage, he purchased and moved a one room cabin on the land inherited from his father. There he entered upon his lifetime career of farming. In 1903 he purchased the interest of his brother Thomas in the farm, and later the interest of two sisters. He prospered and finally bought the quarter section of land which adjoined him on the North. He and his wife continued living on the farm several years after he retired. Later they moved to Chanute, Neosho, Kansas and bought two properties, but later sold one.

He was a Democrat and served many years as committeeman for Chetopa Township. He was elected to Five Mound School Board when his eldest son was in the fourth or fifth grade and served many years after all his children had graduated from grade school. In fact the only way he was able to retire from that position was to move out of the school district. He and his family attended Five Mounds Church, which was Protestant, regularly. He and his wife had been living at 417 West 3d Street, Chanute, Kansas, for several years when he died. She is still (1966) living there in her 90th year. She belongs to the Christian Church. . . .
