Emma Floretta Roberts Adamson
Birth: Nov. 1, 1862, Hollansburg, Darke County, Ohio, USA
Death: Dec. 17, 1948, Nelson, Nuckolls County, Nebraska, USA

Emma Floretta Roberts, daughter of David and Elizabeth Baker Roberts, was born November 1, 1862 near the town of Hallansburg, in Dark County, Ohio, and passed away December 17, 1948, after a short illness, resulting from a fall, having reached the age of 86 years, 1 month and 17 days.

Mrs. Adamson grew to womanhood with her five sisters and brothers in their beloved Ohio home, studying music and becoming an accomplished musician, following it as a profession until after her marriage.

At the age of 27 years, she left Ohio and came to Nebraska, where a number of her relatives had already settled. She made her home with her Uncle Conrad Roberts and family, teaching music in a number of homes in Nuckolls and Clay counties.

She was united in marriage to Moses A. Adamson, on September 3, 1891, and with him started her new career as a home maker, for her husband and his two small children, on a farm near Angus. To this union six children were born, three of which survive.

In February of 1898, the family moved to the farm home two miles east of Nelson, where they reared and schooled their children, after which they retired from farm activities and moved to the present home in west Nelson.

It was on November 4, 1937, Mr. Adamson passed away following a brief illness.

Mrs. Adamson united with the Christian Church in early life, and continued as an active member so long as her health would permit, seldom failing in her attendance at all Church Services.

Children surviving are her daughter, Mrs. Hazel Statz, and sons McKinley of Nelson, and Whitfield of Cherokee, Iowa; Mrs. R.R. Morrow of Granville, N.Y.; and Glen of Nelson; twenty-seven grand-children, twenty-three great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Martha Smock of Richmond, Indiana, and Miss Ella Roberts of Hollansburg, Ohio; a cousin, Mrs. Rose Leach of Edgar, Nebr.; four neices (sic) and two nephews in Ohio, and many other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday afternoon, December 21, at 2:30, from the Christian Church in Nelson, by a former pastor, L.W. Myers, assisted by the present pastor, Brother J.W. Kennedy.
A granddaughter, Mrs. Irene Topliff, sang a favorite hymn, Nearer My God to Thee. A quartette: Mrs. Vera Wood, Leone Smith, Ollie Aikin and Floyd Rouse, sang "Shadows" and "In the Sweet By and By", accompanied by Mrs. J.W. Kennedy.

Burial was made in the Nelson Cemetery, with six grandsons acting as pallbearers - Clifford, Glenn, Jr., Earl, Joe and Darrell Adamson and Raymond Statz.

Those attending from out of town were: Mr. and Mrs. L.W. Myers, Mankato, Kansas, Mrs. Rose Leach, son George and daughter, Mrs. Lora Hakinson, Edgar, Nebraska.

Esther Wentz Starnes
Birth: 1778, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, USA
Death: 14 Apr 1852 (aged 73-74), Union County, North Carolina, USA
Burial: Morning Star Lutheran Cemetery, Matthews, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, USA

Esther "Easter" Wentz was a daughter of Johan Andreas (John Andrew) Wentz (c.1729-1809), an immigrant from the Palatine region of what is now Germany who arrived in America in 1750, and his wife Catherine, maiden name unknown. They lived in Mecklenburg County, NC, the area that later became Union County.

Esther married Jacob Starnes/Stearns/Starns (1775-1848) in Mecklenburg County in April 1798. He was a son of Joseph Starns (c. 1730-1779) and his wife Katherine. His father had been killed by the Indians on the Kentucky frontier and his mother had settled in North Carolina around 1784.

The children of Jacob Starns and Esther Wentz were (as best I can figure):

1. Rachel Starns (1798/9-aft. 1850) was in her mother's household in 1850. No further information.

2. Valentine A. (probably Adam) Starns/Stearns (c.1800-3 June 1875) m. Olivia "Livy" Ritch in 1824, m. Margaret T. Query in 1870. Children: Adam, John Leander, Esther, Dulin, Margaret Jane, Jacob M. and Brown Stearns. All the sons but Adam were killed in the War.

3. Catherine Starns (c. 1802/10) was in her mother's household in 1850. She was head of a household with her brother Joseph W. in 1860. No information after that.

4. Andrew Starns/Starnes (1804-1899), married twice, I believe, first to a lady whose name I don't know, then to Eliza Hemby (1823-1889) in 1840. There were 13 children of the second marriage, and at least 1 of the first. Two sons killed in the War.

5. Mary E. (probably Elizabeth) Starns (1813-1896) m. Eli Hemby (1814/5-1890) in 1835. No children that survived.

6. Margaret Starns (c. 1815-?) was in her mother's household in 1850. No further information.

7. Lydia Starns (c. 1824-?) m. Wylie Conder Z(1831-1863) in 1851. Apparently she died sometime before 1860. One son: Marcus Efird "Mark" Conder (1853-1937).

8. Joseph W. Starns (c. 1826-1862), was in his mother's household in 1850, living with his sister Catherine in 1860. Enlisted Co. C, 10th Batt'n. NC Heavy Artillery Reg't., "The Munroe Heavy Artillery," of the Confederate States Army on 19 March 1862. He became ill with typhoid fever while serving in the army at Wilmington. He came home where he died on 28 Oct. 1862.

In the 1850 census, Esther had Ellison L. Cagle, 15, listed in her household. He later appears as Ellison Leander Starnes (1835-1865), a Confederate soldier. I suspect he was Esther's grandson, likely a son of Andrew by a previous marriage. Ellison Leander Starnes

Jacob Starns was a soldier of the War of 1812. He and Esther were active members of the Morning Star Lutheran Church, which her parents had helped to found. The records of the Church state "Esther Starns, Jacob Starns widow, died April the 14th 1852."

While I am not certain Jabob and Esther are buried at Morning Star, I think it very likely.

Eunice Virginia Stearns Field
Birth: 23 Jan 1906, Charlotte, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, USA
Death: 1 Jun 1983 (aged 77), Asheville, Buncombe County, North Carolina, USA
Burial: Oak Grove Cemetery, Marion, McDowell County, North Carolina, USA

Eunice Virginia Stearns was born on Tuesday, 23 January 1906, at her parents' home at 1006 N. Brevard Street, Charlotte, NC. She was the ninth of ten children, and fourth daughter, born to Dulin Benson Stearns (1863-1962) and Mary Jane Beachum (1867-1910). Her paternal grandparents were Dulin Stearns (c.1836-1863) and his wife Rusha Elizabeth King (1837-1894) of Union County, NC; and, her maternal grandparents were Jeremiah Washington Beachum (1830-1910) and his wife Mary Jane Taylor (1836-1882), of Anson County, NC.

At the time of Eunice's birth, her paternal great great grandfather, Rev. Harmon Daniel King (1805-1906), was still living, and had recently celebrated his 100th birthday. Harmon was the son of another Harmon King who was a Soldier of the Revolution. Both her grandfathers, Jeremiah Beachum and Dulin Stearns, were Confederate soldiers.

Eunice's family roots ran deep into the State of North Carolina. Her father's fathers people had come to Mecklenburg County, NC from Virginia in the 1760s. Her father's mother's people were from Old Camden District in South Carolina. Her mother's father's people had come from Virginia (where they had lived since the 1600s) to Anson County, NC at the time of the Revolution, and some of her mother's mother's people go back to the very early 1700s in NC. Family names associated with her ancestral lines were: Stearns/Starnes, King, Flye/Fley, Ritch, Wentz, Richardson, Beachum/ Beauchamp, Shelton, O'Neal, Taylor, McLendon, Yarborough and Hudson.

Eunice's mother passed away tragically young on 26 Jan. 1910, just 3 days after her (Eunice's) fourth birthday. She was cared for in her childhood by her older sister, Faye (later Mrs. C. C. Fesperman), and her nursemaid Ella. She spent the summers visiting her mother's relatives in Anson County. In 1913, her father remarried, to Miss Nancy Virginia Eagle of Statesville, and in 1916, the family moved from Charlotte to the town of Statesville, Iredell County, NC.

Eunice was a popular student at the Statesville High School, was called "the shooting star" of the girls' basketball team, sang in the glee club and competed in horse shows. She was a member of the Broad Street Methodist Church. She loved to play bridge, and do fine needlework, and designed and made exquisite clothes for herself and later for her daughter. She entertained at elegant bridge parties and dinner parties when she was still in high school . . . something she continued to do all her life. She attended Queens College in Charlotte and Greensboro College in Greensboro, NC, and was a member of the Phi Mu Sorority.

On 13 Oct. 1929, she married John Levi Field (1899-1963, a son of Ernest Marion Field and Mary Rhetta Bell) of Cabarrus Co., NC and Greenville, SC. He was a graduate of Columbia University in New York, and had been associated with her brothers in real estate ventures in Statesville. They began their married life in St. Louis, Missouri, where he had accepted a position designing roads and bridges for the Missouri highway department. They later moved to South Georgia, and eastern NC, where he pursued the same career. The NC highway department sent John Field to Marion, NC in 1941, and when he was going to be transferred to another place, he determined to stay, and started his own land surveying and engineering company.

In the 1930s, Eunice cared for the children of one of her brothers whose wife had died. During the second World War, she decided, with so many men gone, that it was her duty to go to work, and she served on the Rationing Board in Marion for several years. She also cared for a brother who had become ill during this time. After the war, she said she was looking forward to her "retirement" and being able to sleep late, but two close family friends, Dr. George Rowe and Dr. L. William Hagna, asked her to help out "for a few days" in their office, as their office manager had left, "just til they could find someone." She was there more than 30 years, as she said "the oldest temporary job on record." By the end, people in town considered her as much of a medical authority as either of the doctors.

Her home was always open to friends and relatives, and her hospitality was legendary. On Christmas and Thanksgiving, and most Sundays, she would invite friends, widows and childless couples, or people whose families lived far away, to come spend the day with our family, because she hated to think of anyone being alone. The house was always packed to the walls, but everyone had a wonderful time.

Eunice and John Field had one daughter, Joanna Field, who married Kenneth O. Pankow in 1962, and one grandson, John Field Pankow, the writer of this tribute. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Marion. She died on Wednesday, 1 June 1983, in Asheville, and is buried next to her husband at Oak Grove Cemetery in Marion.

"Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies'. . . .Strength and honour are her clothing; and she shall rejoice in time to come. . . . She openeth her mouth with wisdom; and in her tongue is the law of kindness. . . . She looketh well to the ways of her household, and eateth not the bread of idleness. . . . Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her."
Proverbs, Chapter 31.
