NOTE: The minutes of the Court of Rowan County, North Carolina states that on February 7, 1784, Frederick Sterns, orphan of Frederick Sterns, deceased, was indentured to Jacob Brown to learn the trade of waggonmaster. The descendants of Frederick Starnes, III are from the estate records of Mary Fisher Starnes, widow of Frederick Starnes, III in Wilcox County, Alabama, and deeds recorded in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
NOTE: Marion Pomery Carlock, in his book History of the Carlock Family, (Wm. B. Straube Printing Co., Inc., Los Angeles, California, 1929), p. 436 asserts that Caroline Carlock (born ca 1717) who was the daughter of David Carlock (who settled in the Shenandoah Valley by 1741) married Frederick Starnes. I have found no documentation for this assertion. It is not clear from the reference whether he was referring to Frederick Starnes, Sr. or Frederick Starnes, Jr. There is nothing to indicate that Carlock knew that there were two Frederick Starnes. This note is placed here because Carlock's estimated date of birth for Caroline is closer to that of Frederick, Jr. than that of Frederick, Sr.

Frederick Starnes, Jr
Birth: 1724, New York, USA
Death: Apr. 7, 1779, Madison County, Kentucky, USA
According to the book "Of Them That Left A Name Behind," by the late Herman Starnes of Monroe, NC. and H. Gerald Starnes, Frederick Starnes, Jr. (c. 1724-1779), his brother Joseph Starnes (c. 1730-1779) and a kinsman, Michael Moyer, may have been buried at the site of this cemetery after they were killed by the Shawnee Indians on 7 April 1779. The only survivor of the massacre, termed "Starns' Defeat," was Joseph Starnes, Jr. (1755-1844), who escaped, being chased by the Indians for more than a mile, and later reached Boonesborough. Col. William Whitley led a company of men who found the bodies and buried them. One account refers to the group as the party of Capt. Starnes. Both Frederick and Joseph had served in the French & Indian War, but I do not know which was a Captain, or if it was a courtesy title.
Frederick and Joseph were sons of Frederick Staring/Starns/Starnes/Stearns (c. 1700-1774/5), who had come with his father Adam, uncles Valentine and Nicholas, and other unnamed members of their family from near the village of Alzey in the Palatine region of what is now Germany to America in 1710. The name was originally Staring, pronounced something like Stah-rentz, and went through various spellings after they arrived in America. They arrived in New York in June, 1710. Frederick married Mary Goldman (born c. 1703), daughter of Conrad Goldman, another Palatine immigrant. They lived at Herkimer, NY until after 1733, spent a brief time in Pa., and were in southwestern Virginia by about 1740.
Frederick, Jr.'s wife's name was Mary, and Joseph's wife was Katherine. It has been suggested that they may have been sisters named Carlock/Guerlach, and that a third sister, Caroline, married a third Starnes brother, Adam. This has not been proved. The Starnes brothers took up lands in Mecklenburg County, NC, and also vast tracts on the Virginia frontier in what is now Kentucky. They were on a scouting expedition for more lands when they were killed. Michael Moyer, the third man killed, was described by Joseph Starnes, Jr. as his brother-in-law, so it is likely that he was married to a daughter of Joseph, Sr., though he could possibly have been brother to an unknown first wife of Joseph, Jr.
Frederick, Jr. & Mary's children were: Capt. John Starnes (1745-1780, a Soldier of the Revolution killed at the Battle of King's Mountain, m. Margaret Speck), Jacob Starnes (c. 1750-1812, a Soldier of the Revolution and Indian fighter, m. Elizabeth South, lived in Kentucky, d. in St. Helena Parish, Louisiana), Valentine Starnes (c. 1752-1782, killed at the Battle of Blue Licks, Kentucky), Conrad Starnes (c. 1755-c. 1800, m. Margaret Brown), Charles Starnes (c. 1756-c. 1807, m. Caty, perhaps Catherine Beaver), David Starnes (1758-c. 1833, m. Barbara Starns, lived in Mecklenburg Co., NC, now Union Co., 5th great grandfather of the present writer), Frederick Starnes III (c. 1765-c. 1816, m. Mary Fisher).
Frederick's will suggests there were other children younger than David. Jacob and David are the only sons mentioned in his will, in addition to "all the rest of my children." John is proved as a son of Frederick by his brother Valentine's will. I wonder if Valentine and Charles weren't younger than the dates I have for them . . . or they and Conrad may actually have been sons of one of Frederick's brothers.

c. Frederick Starnes married Sally _____. . . .
NOTE: There is a census entry for 1790 in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina for "Widow Starnes", showing three males and three females. One female would be Katherine Starnes, widow of Joseph Starnes. One male would be Joseph Starnes, Jr. Mary, Barbara, and the wife of Michael Moyer? would have already left the household. This would leave 4 children unaccounted for. In her manuscript Our Starnes Family, Descendants of Joseph Starnes, Sr. and Others who Resided in Caldwell County, North Carolina, Frances Starnes Lesley lists the following children of Joseph Starnes: Joseph, Jr., Catherine, Peter, Mary, Nicholas, Frederick, Isaac, and Leonard. I have no information that would link Peter, Isaac, or Leonard to the Joseph Starnes, Sr. line. In an article by Sherman and Minnie Belle Starnes in the Caldwell County Heritage it is stated that the children of Joseph Starnes were Joseph, Jr., Mary, Frederick, Isaac, Leonard and others. It appears that the information in this article may have come from some work done by Mamie M. Bisanar contains the same erroneous information linking Joseph to the English Starnes family, i.e. Nathaniel and Shubel that appears in other material that I have found from Dr. Bisanar. The reference to Frederick being the son of Joseph states that he was married to Mary Goldman, which is clearly incorrect. If a Frederick Starnes did in fact marry Mary Goldman, then it was Frederick I, not a son of Joseph who was a son of Frederick I.
(2) Starnes, H. Gerald & Starnes, Herman, Of Them That Left a Name Behind - A History of the Starnes Family, Baltimore, MD, Gateway Press, 1983, p. 211:
Jacob Starnes had married Esther Wentz in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina in April, 1798 and settled in Union County around 1800. At this time they had one child. On March 14, 1814 he was drafted into service in Capt. Robert Wood's Eighth Company of seventy-one North Carolina Militia detached from the Second Mecklenburg Regiment. Mecklenberg provided five militia companies for the War of 1812. Col. Jesse A. Pearson commanded the detached companies.
Pvt. Jacob Starnes became quite ill while in service at Fort Hawkins and was unable to travel when the troops marched out to reinforce Gen. Jackson's forces in the Mississippi Territory (now Alabama). Robert Boyd remained with Jacob to care for him during his illness. The troops returned in late July or early August, but several weeks passed before the ailing Jacob returned home to his wife and their four or five children.
Esther (or Easter?) and Jacob Starnes raised eight children, the last born in 1825. Jacob died in Union County, North Carolina on January 20, 1848; he was in his seventies at the time. His widow continued to live in the same county.

Jacob Starnes
Birth: 1775, Virginia, USA
Death: 29 Jan 1848 (aged 72-73), Union County, North Carolina, USA
Burial: Morning Star Lutheran Cemetery, Matthews, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, USA
Jacob Starns (also spelled Stearns and Starnes) was a son of Joseph Starns (c.1730-1779) and his wife Katherine, possibly Carlock/Gerlach. His father was killed on the Kentucky frontier in 1779, and his mother settled on lands he owned in what was then Mecklenburg (now Union) County, NC around 1784.
Jacob married Esther Wentz (c.1778-1852) in Mecklenburg County, NC in April 1798. She was a daughter of John Andrew and Catherine Wentz. Jacob served in the War of 1812. He and Esther had eight children.
Jacob and Esther were active members of the Morning Star Lutheran Church, her parents had helped to found in the 1770s. I do not know that Jacob and Esther are buried at Morning Star Church, but think it's highly likely.
The children of Jacob Starns and Esther Wentz were (as best I can figure):
1. Rachel Starns (1798/9-aft. 1850) was in her mother's household in 1850. No further information.
2. Valentine A. (probably Adam) Starns/Stearns (c.1800-3 June 1875) m. Olivia "Livy" Ritch in 1824, m. Margaret T. Query in 1870. Children: Adam, John Leander, Esther, Dulin, Margaret Jane, Jacob M. and Brown Stearns. All the sons but Adam were killed in the War.
3. Catherine Starns (c. 1802/10) was in her mother's household in 1850. She was head of a household with her brother Joseph W. in 1860. No information after that.
4. Andrew Starns/Starnes (1804-1899), married twice, I believe, first to a lady whose name I don't know, then to Eliza Hemby (1823-1889) in 1840. There were 13 children of the second marriage, and at least 1 of the first. Two sons killed in the War.
5. Mary E. (probably Elizabeth) Starns (1813-1896) m. Eli Hemby (1814/5-1890) in 1835. No children that survived.
6. Margaret Starns (c. 1815-?) was in her mother's household in 1850. No further information.
7. Lydia Starns (c. 1824-?) m. Wylie Conder Z(1831-1863) in 1851. Apparently she died sometime before 1860. One son: Marcus Efird "Mark" Conder (1853-1937).
8. Joseph W. Starns (c. 1826-1862), was in his mother's household in 1850, living with his sister Catherine in 1860. Enlisted Co. C, 10th Batt'n. NC Heavy Artillery Reg't., "The Munroe Heavy Artillery," of the Confederate States Army on 19 March 1862. He became ill with typhoid fever while serving in the army at Wilmington. He came home where he died on 28 Oct. 1862.

Please note some Public Member Trees @ Ancestry.com give his date of birth (DOB) as 2 Apr 1755 and the date of marriage as 1770 which would make him only 15 years of age at the time of marriage. The supposed DOB for Isaac (first son) is about 1771. It is believed that Jacob may have been born about 1750 instead of 1755.

Also mentioned in the records of the estate of John Starnes [Sr.] is John Wentz, husband of Catherine Starnes. The records of the Starnes family of Buncombe County state that John Starnes, Jr., was the son of John Starnes [Sr.], and that he had two siblings, Frederick and Christina. The estate of John Starnes [Sr.] was opened in 1781, but was not closed until 1802, indicating that it could not be closed until John Starnes, Jr. came of age.

Capt John Starnes
Birth: 1745, Virginia, USA
Death: 1780 (aged 34-35)
Burial: Unknown
John Starnes was the eldest son of Frederick Starnes, Jr. (c.1724-1779) and his wife Mary, possibly Carlock. His paternal grandparents were Frederick Staring/Starns/Starnes (c. 1700-1775) and his wife Mary Goldman, who had immigrated to New York as children in 1710, settled briefly on the Juniata River in PA, and came to Virginia by about 1743. John was born in old Augusta County, Virginia and came to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina as a young man.
He rose to prominence in his community, and was a judge in the Mecklenburg County Courts. He served as a Captain in the second Mecklenburg Militia Regiment in the Revolutionary War. (I believe he lived in the section of Mecklenburg County which later became Cabarrus Co.) Most sources state that he died at the Battle of Camden, SC in 1780. However, I have found some indication that he may still have been alive in 1782. Nevertheless, the statement that "he died in service of his country" is probably quite accurate.
John married Margaret Speck around 1770, and they had at least three children: Frederick Starnes III (c. 1771-c. 1851, m. Magdaline Cline), Catherine Starnes (c. 1774-c.1814, m. John Andrew Wentz, Jr.), and John Starnes, Jr. (6 March 1779-20 Dec. 1855, m. Mary Etta Hise).
I believe there were probably other children. I have two other possible sons provisionally attributed to John in my notes: Jacob Starnes (c.1772-1816, m. Gloria Starns) and Joseph Starnes (c. 1775-aft. 1850, m. Susannah Ury). Both these men were married in Cabarrus Co. in 1794, and their marriage bonds were signed by Frederick Starnes, presumably Frederick Starnes III.
There is a memorial stone for John at St. John's Lutheran Church in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, but I do not know if he is actually buried there.
And there has been some confusion between this John Starnes and his first cousin, also named John Starnes, his first cousin, eldest son of his uncle Leonard Starnes Find A Grave # 54787084

Joseph Starnes was the second of three (there were probably more) sons born to David Starnes (c. 1758-aft. 1833) and his wife Barara Starns (c. 1760-aft. 1824). He was born circa 1787, in the section of Mecklenburg County that later became Union, and died in Union County sometime between 1850 and 1860. (Correction! I just found him on the 1860 census, so he apparently died sometime after 6 July 1860, the date the census was taken.)
Joseph married Catherine "Kate" Thompson (c. 1790-1850s) and they had at least six children:

h. Henrietta Starnes (born November 3, 1812) married Wyatt Fowler.
3. Daughter married Michael Moyer?
NOTE: The Revolutionary War pension record of Joseph Starnes, Jr. states that at Starnes Defeat in 1779 his "brother-in-law", Michael Moyer, was killed. This means that either Michael Moyer was married to a daughter of Joseph Starnes, or that Joseph Starnes, Jr. was married to the sister of Michael Moyer. If the relationship is the latter, then Joseph Starnes, Jr. was married at least twice. This is not inconceivable since he was 41 years of age when he married Rachel Rice. If he was married earlier, were there children of that marriage? See also the note for Joseph Starnes who married Susannah Ury in 1794 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina, below.
4. Mary Starnes (born ca 1758, died ca 1820) married Leonard Hise. Their children:

Since Revolutionary War pension records indicate that Joseph Starnes, Jr. and Leonard Hise were close friends for a period covering over 50 years, that Leonard would have married Joseph's sister is certainly plausible. Is it possible that Leonard Hise married the widow of Michael Moyer after the Revolutionary War?
This is a very difficult family; one that I have worked on for many years. There are a number of Hises in North Carolina, Tennessee and Georgia in the early 1800's who may well be descendants of Leonard Hise and Mary Starnes. For further information on the Hise family: Hise Family Assocation and Kathleen Hunt Homepage
5. Barbara Starnes (born ca 1760) married David Starnes. See entry under David Starnes, son of Frederick Starnes, Jr. for their children.
NOTE: There is no direct documentation to show that Barbara was a daughter of Joseph Starnes. She married David Starnes on February 28, 1784 in Rowan County, North Carolina. The bondsman was Joseph Starnes (presumably Joseph Starnes, Jr.). The records of Virginia and North Carolina indicate that there were two branches of the Starnes family that settled in North Carolina after the Revolutionary War, those of Frederick, Jr. and Joseph (both of whom were killed in Kentucky in 1779). Both branches of the Starnes family moved from Virginia to North Carolina in the early 1780's. For those reasons, Barbara is designated as a daughter of Joseph Starnes.
6. Nicholas Starnes (born ca 1760, died ca 1820) married Sophia Cress on December 19, 1791. Their children:
a. Jacob Starnes married Jane Russell on May 31, 1821.
b. Margaret Starnes married Joshua Headly.
c. Elizabeth Starnes married Mithias Harkey on January 17, 1837.
d. Reuben Starnes (born March 23, 1797) married Mary Hood on February 8, 1823.
e. Catherine Starnes (born April 23, 1799) married Tunis Hood IV on February 22, 1822.
f. Sophia K. Starnes (born 1811, died 1881) married William Roark.
g. Joseph Lee Starnes (born 1809, died January, 1899) married Elizabeth Fisher on October 28, 1831.
NOTE: This list of children is from Of Them That Left a Name Behind, p. 527.
7. Jacob Starnes (born ca 1775, died ca 1845) married Esther Wence (born ca 1778, died after 1850) on April 20, 1798. Their children:
a. Rachel Starnes (born July 31, 1798).
b. Valentine Starnes (born ca 1800) married Olleary (Elizabeth) Ritch (born ca 1802) on August 17, 1824 at Morningstar Lutheran Church, Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
NOTE: There is no direct proof that Valentine Starnes was the son of Jacob Starnes. However, Esther Wence had a brother named Valentine, and the 1850 census records show that this Valentine Starnes had a daughter named Esther.

Joseph Starnes, Sr
Birth: 1730, New York, USA

It has been suggested that they may have been sisters named Carlock/Gerlach, and that a third sister, Caroline, married a third Starnes brother, Adam. This has not been proved. The Starnes brothers took up lands in Mecklenburg County, NC, and also vast tracts on the Virginia frontier in what is now Kentucky. They were on a scouting expedition from Fort Boonesborough, looking for more lands when they were killed. Michael Moyer, the third man killed, was described by Joseph Starnes, Jr. as his brother-in-law, so it is likely that he was married to a daughter of Joseph, Sr.
The children of Joseph & Katherine Starnes were: Katherine (c. 1754-aft. 1820, m. Capt. William Crabtree) Joseph, Jr. (1755-1839/44, a Soldier of the Revolution, lived in Burke, now Alexander Co., NC, m. Rachel Rice), Nicholas (c. 1756/60-?, m. Sophia Kress), unknown daughter (m. Michael Moyer), Mary (c. 1758, m. Leonard Hise), Barbara (c. 1760-aft. 1824, m. David Starnes), Elizabeth (c. 1770-aft. 1850, m. Philip Wolf, not proved) and Jacob (1775-1848, m. Esther Wentz, the 4th great grandparents of the present writer.)

See also . . . Joseph Starnes who married Susannah Ury in 1794 in Cabarrus County, North Carolina. . . .

Joseph Starnes
Birth: 1755
Death: 1840, Burke County, North Carolina, USA
Joseph Starnes was the oldest child of Joseph and Katherine Starns. He was born in southwestern Virginia very near the North Carolina border in 1755. His father, Joseph, Sr., and uncle, Frederick, were heavily involved in land speculation in North Carolina and Kentucky in the 1760s and 1770s. Joseph, Jr. joined them in their trips when he became a young man, and he became very familiar with the geography of what would become western Virginia and North Carolina, and eastern Kentucky and Tennessee. In April, 1779 on what would prove to be their final expedition into Kentucky his father, uncle and brother-in-law were all killed by Indians. He was the only member of the party to escape.
During the Revolutionary War he served as a scout in the western parts of the southern colonies and fought in the Battle of King's Mountain, SC. For his service in the American Revolution he received a pension from the Federal Government.
At the end of the war he moved his widowed mother and his younger siblings to Mecklenburg County, NC. He took on the responsibilities of the head of the household and helped her to rear the children. He did not marry until his siblings were grown.
In August, 1796 he married Rachel Rice, the daughter of Jared and Lettie(?) Rice. They had eight children, Eleanor, Joseph III, Jesse, Jarret Harrison, Sarah, Rachel, Jacob and Myra.
In 1816 he moved his family to their new home near the Catawba River in what was then Burke County, NC and is now Alexander County, NC. They lived on a large tract of land on the Middle Little River which flows into the Catawba. There he farmed and operated a grist mill. He also served as a Justice of the Peace.
When he died circa late 1839 or early 1840 he was buried in the cemetery at the meetinghouse, which later became Bethlehem Baptist Church. His original tombstone disappeared long ago but the approximate location was identified by Wm. Leroy Starnes and others of the Bethlehem community in the 1960s and a replacement stone was dedicated to his memory.
Some of the dates on the monument have since been determined to be incorrect. The year of his birth, 1755, is found in his pension application papers. His marriage bond to Rachel Rice, while dated 16 August, 1796, can not be proved to be the date of the marriage. Although marriages usually occurred within a few days to a few weeks after the bond was issued, one can assume that the marriage occurred in late August, 1796 in Mecklenburg County, NC. His estate papers are dated from 23 April 1840 forward. So circa 1839/1840 is more acceptable for the date of his death.

NOTE: At this time, there is no direct evidence that proves that Thomas Starnes was the son of Frederick Starnes, Sr. Most of the authorities on the Starnes family place Thomas as a son of Frederick. An article by Gordon Aronhime in the Bristol Herald Courier, dated February 12, 1965 states that there are references to Thomas Starns being along the Holston in the period just prior to the French and Indian War (1756-1763). I do not have the documentation to back up this assertion, but Mr. Aronhime was known to have been a thorough researcher. Thomas Starnes later appears in the records of Mecklenburg County, North Carolina from 1770 to 1781. For Thomas to appear in the records prior to 1756, he would have had to have been born in the 1730's and thus a son of Frederick, Sr. . . .

Thomas Starns, we believe, was one of the younger sons of Frederick I and Mary. He was the father of Peter and George Starnes (Scott County, Va.) and lived on Lick Run, a branch of Carlock's Creek just north of the present town of Chilhowie in Smyth County. There is early mention of Thomas being in this area when it was first settled. Area historians believe he settled with Carlocks and Goldmans on the Holston in the early 1750's, only to be run out by the Indians and driven back to his father's area on the New River. From our deductions of Thomas' date of birth, it would seem that he was born in German Flats, N.Y. ca 1733.

p. 187:
About this time [1784] Thomas Starnes and his son, Frederick, also moved to North Carolina. His teenage son, George, born in 1771, may have stayed in Virginia with his older brother, Peter, whose farm, on the south side of the middle fork of the Holston, was bounded on one border by Mary Starnes, widow of Frederick II.

The family name later officially given to this place begins with a 1710 NY boy emigrant Frederick (Staring) Starn (ca. 1700-1775) from the German Palatinate. In 1741, Frederick Starns left his 100-acre Mohawk Valley, NY Patent to lead a few German families to settle on the Juniata in PA. They were evicted by the Lt. Gov. of PA with militia in 1743 on a charge of the Delawares that Germans were on their hunting grounds, a violation of their treaty with Sir William Penn.
The Starnes Family arrived on the New River in the spring of 1744. During the French & Indian War in July 1755, Frederick was wounded & captured but escaped from the Indians. By 1770, the Starnes had moved west to the Middle Fork of the Holston River. Thomas, the youngest of Frederick's sons, had a 91a. farm there. Peter, a son of Thomas, & others served during the Revolutionary War. Four of the family were killed. After the war the Starnes migrated from their Holston settlements in VA to NC, KY & TN.
Peter named two sons for his uncles. Frederick II and Joseph, killed in KY by the Indians in an event known as Starnes' Defeat. Frederick Starnes (1790-1871), a successful farmer, and heirs acquired tracts of the highland on the bluff. Joseph (1794-1857), a veteran of the War of 1812, served in the defense of Norfolk. His heirs acquired the lowlands in the big bend of Clinch River. These areas became known as "Starnes Bluff" and "Starnes Bend."

STARNES BLUFF AND STARNES BEND II
About 1797 Peter, John and George Starnes, grandsons of Frederic and Mary Goldman Starns, left Greene Co. TN and moved back to southwest VA. They bought adjacent tracts of land some six miles north of present day Gate City on the south side of Copper Ridge. These tracts were located near springs by the big elm. This area became part of Scott Co. in 1814. In 1829 George Starnes bought tracts of land on the north side of Ridge near the Clinch River. In 1831 Joseph and In 1834 Frederic, two of Peter's sons, bought tracts of land on the north side adjacent to George. These were the first of several purchases by the Starnes' which eventually led to these areas being called "Starnes Bluff & Starnes Bend."
Frederic Starnes, for whom the "Bluff" was named, was married to Elizabeth Snider. To this union were born five children: William K. Starnes, Malinda Starnes Lark, Malissa Starnes Stewart, Katherine Starnes Hill and Johnson W. Starnes. The Frederic Starnes house still stands. He and many of his descendants are buried in the nearby cemetery. Starnes Bluff community church, which also served as the school, still stands on his land.
Joseph Starnes, who bought tracts of land just west of Frederic, married Sallie Thornberry. To this union were born two sons: William W. Starnes and Hiram K. Starnes. Although Joseph's house is gone, he and many of his descendants rest in the old cemetery located near where he lived. His sons purchased large tracts of land on each side of the big bend in the Clinch River and from this the area became known as "Starnes Bend." | STARNES, Thomas (I102)

f. Sarah (Sally) Hise (born ca 1795, died ca 1831) married John A. Limbaugh on May 9, 1813 (bond) in Burke County, North Carolina.
g. George W.B. Hise (born ca 1798, died 1861) married (1st) _____, and (2d) Mary Matuson Gates (born ca 1821) on September 30, 1838.
NOTE: George Hise was born in Rowan County, North Carolina ca 1755, and migrated with his father to Washington County, Virginia in 1772. He entered land in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina on March 1, 1779. They remained in Mecklenburg/Cabarrus County until 1806 when they moved to Burke County. The name Starringer is a frequently used corruption of Starnes. Peter Starnes and John Starnes are listed in an estate record from 1775 in Mecklenburg County as "Starringer". The identification of Catherine's parentage hinges on which branches of the Starnes family were living in Mecklenburg County in 1780. It is assumed that a young woman would have been living with her parents, and not by herself. The records of Mecklenburg County indicate that Adam Starnes and Thomas Starnes may have still been living in that county in 1780. The families of Joseph and Leonard Starnes had already moved back to Virginia at that time. This person would be of the third generation. pp. 678-679:
John Starnes, who was born in 1774 in North Carolina, seems to be the first Starnes to settle in Hawkins County. According to Scott County, Virginia tradition, John was the eldest son of John who lived on the waters of Copper Creek and is the first Starnes of record in that area. The War of 1812 chapter of this volume provides information of his participation in the Tennessee Militia.
The Starnes settlement was in Lee Valley on Richardson Creek, which lies in Poor Valley between Clinch Mountain and Copper Ridge. Tennessee Route 66 passes through this small, rural community about halfway between the towns of Rogersville and Sneedville, Tennessee. The terrain is somewhat mountainous here at about the 1,500-foot elevation where the creek breaks through the highlands.
There is no doubt that the Hawkins County Starnes were closely related to the Grainger County and Scott County, Virginia Starnes. They were acquainted with both these segments of the family in the early years. Today, in and around Rogersville, Rutledge and Kingsport, the descendents of Hawkins County John live with those of Adam II of Grainger County and with those of Peter, John and George of Scott County, Virginia.
Hawkins County Circuit Court files show that one Elizabeth Henry had an illegitimate son (called Eldridge Hord) by John Starnes, Jr. The boy was born in 1830 and the Starnes tried to gain possession of him.
pp. 689-693:
JOHN STARNES 1774 - 1859
John Starnes, b. 1774 in North Carolina (son of one John Starnes), d. 16 December 1859 in Lee Valley, Hawkins Co., Tenn., is said to have married Jane Adams. Census records show John Starnes' children as born in Tennessee, the first record I have found of him in Hawkins County is the marriage of his daughter Sallie Starnes to A.D. Looney in 1819. John Starnes does not appear on the 1812 Tax List of the district in which he later lived and the first record of his buying land is in March, 1830. No will or division of estate has been found. From the gap (or ages of children) in his family as shown by the census of 1830 and 1840, it is probable he was twice married. The 1830 census is the earliest preserved for East Tennessee.
The children . . . are as follows:
1. "Margaret Starnes, b. 23 Janu 1797, d. 15 Sept 1880 in Washington Co., Ark., married 16 Jan 1827 in Hawkins, William Ingram Wilson, b. 13 Jan 1803, d. 11 Jan 1876 in Washington Co., Ark. They moved to Hardin Co., Ky. in 1829 and to Washington Co., Ark., Dec. 1830." . . .
2. "Sallie Starnes, b. 30 Jan. 1799, d. 8 Feb. 1874 in Hawkins Co., Tenn., m. ca. 1819 in Hawkins Co., Absalom D. Looney, b. 5 Mar. 1790, d. 12 Dec. 1862 in Hawks Co." . . .
3. Catherine "Katie" Starnes, b. 1 May 1800, d. 27 Sept. 1887 in Hawkins County, Tenn., m. ca. 1822 Robert Rogers, 1801-1858: seven children.
4. Pauline (probably Polly) Starnes, m. _____ Helton and moved to Illinois (Tradition).

[Note by compiler: Part of the U.S. Federal Censuses from 1850-1880 included a mortality schedule enumerating the individuals who had died in the previous year. Because each of the censuses from 1850-1880 began on June 1, "previous year" refers to the 12 months preceding June 1, or June 1 (of the previous year) to May 31 (of the census year).
Thus, according to the federal census mortality schedule for the year 1860, John STARNS died in November 1869.]
